Best Luxury Resort Kerala

Overlooking the beguiling waters of Vembanad Lake, Punnamada Resort enthralls you with comfort and luxury at a location that enlivens your senses. The serene backwaters of the lake spread far and wide at the edge of the resort, where boats large and small cruise gently over the waters at daybreak as you watch them with a cup of tea in hand from the sit out of your villa.
The green stretch of the resort is carefully tended to grow bright orchids and colourful flowers amidst coconut and mango trees cherished by the people of Kerala. The resort’s villas adopt tradition Kerala architecture with generous wooden furnishing and allowing plenty of sunlight in the room, combining a touch of heritage with opulence.

Spend your days at Punnadama's lake-view villas where hours pass by unruffled. You hear no sounds at the resorts besides the lapping waves of the backwaters, a gentle breeze and whisper of the trees. Sit on a bench under the fig tree next to the lake with a book or snooze in your rocking chair in the room overlooking the backwaters, time moves so quietly without your realizing it, as hours seem like minutes and days pass in a trice. Welcome to a place so surreal that it perfectly fits the idea of a holiday in your dreams.

Ayurveda and wellness therapies, house boat cruises, bicycle rides, sprawling garden, a swimming pool, spacious and well equipped villas, delicious food from Kerala and across the world are just a few things at the resort that enhances your holiday by the lake.

Amazing Backwaters Alleppey Kerala

The brackish waters of the Vembanad Lake,Alleppey Kerala trapped in a narrow stretch of land between Arabain sea and the hills of the Western Ghats form a complex network of water bodies, canals and islands, where people of Kuttanad make a living dependent equally on land and water. The two thousand square-kilometre expanse of the lake is a magical mix of placid waters and lush greenery, where a network of waterways crisscross each other to form islands with paddy fields, coconut groves and small villages under the shade of mango and jackfruit trees. House boats in Alleppey and fishing canoes gently cruise on these canals fringed by long lines of plantains and coconut trees on either side, occasionally stopping for refreshments at the lakeside stopovers or to drink in the view of temples, churches, villages and the greenery along the shore. The deeper waters offer isolation from the rush of the land, while the picturesque combination of waterways and narrow tree-lined embankments make the backwaters appear like a dreamland. This unique waterscape has earned a place in National Geographic Magazine’s list of fifty must see destinations in the world.

In early twentieth century, several artificial islands were created by forming earthen embankments, where paddy, plantains and coconuts are grown on ground that is a few feet below the water level. People living in the islands depend on small personal boats or ferries to get to the mainland and further. Coir factories, fishing and agriculture support the economy of the islands where people depend on the lake to make a living.

Punnamada Resort Alleppey is located on the shores of this water world, facing the largest open stretch of Vembanad Lake. Explore the backwaters of Kerala in several ways with our house boats that gently float on the canals, row boats that take you up close to give you a glimpse of life on the shoreline or on speedboats that get you across in a jiffy. Relish a relaxed holiday on the backwaters on Punnamada's house boat cruises and watch a new world unfold as you steer into the waters.

Onam-festivals

Onam, Kerala’s most important festival is celebrated with religious fervour and festive mood through ten days sometime during August and September in Chingam month. The rice harvest and rain flowers festival commemorates demon king Mahabali’s annual visit from Patal-loka (nether world). Onam spans from Atham (first day) to Thiruvonam (final day). Temples teem with votaries who perform special pujas in the morning. Blessings of the elders are eagerly sought by youngsters to make the year ahead a successful one.Traditional rituals are observed with veneration and followed by sumptuous feasts featuring 21 homemade curries and payasam served on plantain fronds. Onam’s appeal increases manifold times with the extravagance created by fireworks, elephant carnivals, boat races, Kathakali dances etc.
Mahabali
Mahabali, the legendary king, ruled Kerala in ancient times and is still revered for his magnanimity. His reign is considered as the golden era in the history of Kerala. Subjects of Mahabali led a happy, harmonious and prosperous life free of worries and threats. This glorious period saw its conclusion when in return of a boon granted to Vamana incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Mahabali had to relinquish his kingdom and retreat to Patala. Vamana was so pleased with the generosity of Mahabali that he permitted him to visit his people once every year.Onam is the time when it is believed that Mahabali pays a visit to his subjects.
Pookalam
Mahabali is given a grand welcome through Pookalam, a flower carpet prepared in front of houses. Beautiful flowers of different varieties and hues are collected and petals severed into small pieces for embellishing the intricate designs made on ground. The artistic carpets are delicately done and then small pandals with decorative festoons are erected over them.Flowers endemic to Kerala are used for making Dashapushpam. The pookalams are accompanied by earthen mounds of square pyramid shapes, representative of Mahabali and Vamana, put in courtyards with walls plastered by cow dung. Special competitions are held across Kerala wherein people prepare lavish and spectacular pookalams in vibrant and unique designs.
Onam sadhya
Onam sadhya is the traditional multi course vegetarian feast served on plantain fronds. Steamed rice is the chief attraction of sadhya and accompanied by numerous delectable dishes. The nine course meal essentially comprises of 11 to 13 dishes which vary from region to region. People sit cross-legged on mats laid on floors to enjoy the feast.
Onam kalikal
Onam apart from having religious significance also fosters societal bonds. Onam Kalikal collectively refers to the various games played during Onam days. Hardworking Kerala folks are known for their energy and after indulging in lip-smacking Onam Sadhya, these games provide the needful refreshment and merriment. Men involve themselves in vigorous pastimes like Talappanthukali, a ball game, archery or Ambeyyal, Kutukutu and combative sports such as Attakalam and Kayyankali. Women take part in cultural activities. Elder folks play indoor games such as Chathurangam, cards and dice. Kayyankali is an exhibition of the strength and physical force where participants aggressively challenge each other and fight with fists. In Ambeyyal, blunted arrows and bamboo bows are used wherein members of opposing team try to deprive the other of arrow stocks.
Vallamkali
The Snake Boat race organized is another attraction of Onam. Extravagantly decorated boats accommodating hundreds of men with oars in their hands participate in the race of supremacy. Chanting of songs and cheering by spectators make the event a colourful sight.
Traditional attire
People drape themselves in traditional attire during Onam. Younger members in the family are gifted ‘onakkodi’ or ‘onappudava‘ by the elders. Kodi and pudava stand for new and clothes respectively. Men and women engage in purchasing of mundu and saree, traditional attires of men and women. Onam season experiences a surge in the demand of kasavu saree and kasavu mundu which are hand woven attires with golden brocades. Miniature versions of mundus called ‘chittada’ are gifted to children and infants. Modernity has steeped in and modern attires such as ‘onakkodi’ are also exchanged as they are convenient to wear. We, at Punnamada organize special sadhya for guests during the festive days of Onam (INR 600 per head) and events such as Attapookalam festival and cultural events like Mohiniyattam. Come and enjoy the unique offerings of ‘God’s Own Country’.

Karkidaka Chikitsa Treatment Kerala

Karkkidaka chikitsa was a traditional healing treatment of Kerala that was adopted during the monsoon to get rid of physical and mental health problems during that particular season. The body will react more positively to all kinds of treatment during this period.
Inclusions
Ayurveda is based on the principle of tridoshas-(vata, pitha, kapha) whose equilibrium is the state of health. So it insists on certain rules for every season in the form of diet and way of life to maintain the equilibrium of the three energies (vata, pitha, kapha) that govern our body.
Ayurveda describes the distribution of each season according to the movement of sun to south and north. The northerly movement of sun (uttarayana) is followed by 3 seasons and 3 seasons after the southern movement (dakshinayana).
Karkkitaka is a Malayalam month that starts from 16th of July up to 16th of august which can be correlated to the rainy season.
The sudden transit of season from the scorching heat of summer to monsoon will derange the entire basic metabolism in a human, states the relevancy of the care to be taken in karkkidakom. Rainy season comes in dakshinayana in which the digestive powers in humans get hampered and are more prone to infections. The changes are even visible in the vegetations around us which will be full of acidic and wet nature, after its consumption will derange the pitha and vata dosha respectively.
So ayurveda insists to adopt certain diet and way of life to prevent from the harmful effects of the rainy season. It also substantiates the need to detoxify the body during this very season due to change in climatic conditions and also neutralizes the health issues from the modern way of life and also the aggravated condition that already persists.
Karkkidaka chikitsa was a traditional healing treatment of Kerala that was adopted during the monsoon to get rid of physical and mental health problems during that particular season. The body will react more positively to all kinds of treatment during this period. So in precise karkkidaka chikitsa is meant to detoxify and to rejuvenate one’s body by boosting their immunity and alleviating their present health conditions.
Importance of Karkkidaka Kanji (Medicated Gruel)
Ayurveda tackles the health condition in monsoon with a special medicated gruel to normalize all your metabolic activities and also boosting your immunity. It is prepared from a special variety of rice called njavara rice along with certain powders of some medicines and ghee. Coconut milk is added at last to the cooked gruel. Juices of certain herbs are also added to the above preparation according to the condition. This gruel is considered as health tonic and is very effective for removing general fatigue. It can be taken once in a day.

They used to span about 100 feet on an average and ferried across the backwaters connecting remote villages colleting merchandise from them and supplying to traders. A standard Kettuvalam could ferry about 30 tons of merchandise with ease. Most of the houseboats used to ply between Cochin port and Kuttanad ( a place famous for its delicious marine dishes).
Traditional construction techniques

The body of the houseboat never featured any nail. The hull was made from elongated wooden planks and secured tightly with other parts through coconut fibre made coir ropes. Cashew nut shells were boiled and the resultant greasy resin, black in colour, was used to coat the body. This additionally served to waterproof the wooden part and prevented premature rotting due to prolonged exposure to water. Bamboo poles were used for manoeuvring the kettuvalam along the aquamarine backwater. The top portion of the houseboat was prepared by weaving of natural products such as coir, bamboo and panambu. The upper part was fashioned into vaulted shapes which allowed creation of spacious interiors and elevated ceilings. The furnishings inside the boat were manufactured from products similar to the aforesaid to facilitate optimum comfort, luxury and tranquil ambience. Just like the present day, houseboats were used in the days of the yore to enjoy best backwaters trips in Kerala. True holistic backwater experience can only be availed of by staying overnight in a houseboat exuding traditional fervour and fragrant with the appetizing aroma of marine cuisine. Royalty of Cochin and Travancore used to sponsor the construction of robust houseboats in order to engage in profitable trading with the Arabian and African countries. The design of houseboats also appealed to other nations to which these boats were used for shipping of cargo and architects becoming inspired from traditional designs started copying its distinctive construction methods.
Other facts
Nobles and members of the regal or affluent society used to float around on houseboats to enjoy the finer moments of the life. Chefs were appointed on boat to prepare gourmet cuisine to appeal to the distinctive palate of the royalty. As the houseboat made its way through the network of winding routes of lakes, canals, lagoons and rivers, the members of the nobility derived extreme pleasure. The privilege was reserved for a few in the ancient Kerala. After India gained independence in 1947, the erstwhile princely states of Cochin and Travancore were merged to form Kerala. Houseboats became a major medium to allure tourists and earn revenues for the state as well as provide gainful employment to natives. Luxury tour packages were designed and customized to suit the tourists on different budgets. Houseboats were also used to provide tourists a close view of the thrilling snake boat race, which was later renamed to Nehru trophy. Many cargo boats of large shape were converted to houseboats to capitalize on the latest tourism trend. Lagoons with mirror still water, lakesides resembling the serene beauty of picture books, canals fringed by palm trees and the shimmering aquamarine water all combine with the grand houseboat to offer a memorable holidaying experience on the backwaters of Kerala.
